Solution description

Taskbase has been developing research-driven, advanced adaptive learning technologies for the past 5 years. To date, we solved a number of  difficult problems like interoperability of different data types and implementation of standard content formats. In order to contribute to a fast and sustainable development of education innovation in Europe and to promote ethical, research-driven edtech, Taskbase is willing to bring this technology component into an open-source project.

The open-source digital learning library aims to enable and accelerate the development of student-centric and research-driven, high-quality education technologies focused on improved learning outcomes and ethical use of data.

External funds are required to develop, maintain, promote and document this project and we are confident that this would be possible through grants and external funding. 

Solution context

Today, every e-learning project starts from scratch as a proof of concept. There are very few resources on which educators and developers can build effective, high-quality, ethical AI driven learning solutions. This leads to very expensive and slow development, and we end up with digital learning products that cannot interact with each other and do not support an ethical use of user-generated data. There is a  lack of data standards and having a research driven, pre-validated product development framework, which makes it nearly impossible to build high-quality ethical edtech products.

Solution impact

Our solution supports one of the main key goals of the Digital Education Action Plan 2021- 2027 and could be further developed as a concrete initiative under the European Digital Education Hub. The open-source digital learning library supports cross-sector collaboration and new models for the seamless exchange of digital learning content, addressing issues such as interoperability, quality, accessibility and inclusion and common standards for digital education. 

In practice, the open-source digital learning toolkit helps the creation of new standards in EdTech by providing developers and educators with an open-source library of digital learning components co-created and validated by an interdisciplinary network of researchers, educators, entrepreneurs and experts. The library informs the creation of a much needed framework for data standards in education at a policy-making level and beyond.

Through a close collaboration with universities, edtech developers and educators networks and supported financially through grants, the project can be developed in a sustainable way mid and long term. Ideally, long term,  it would become an initiative developed under the European Digital Education Hub.

We are an experienced team, very used to working in interdisciplinary settings. The universities and edtech developers networks that we reached out to during the hackathon enthusiastically welcomed this solution and would be very interested in joining its development and implementation.
